When Strangers Choose Kindness: A reminder that the smallest moments often reveal the very best of us.

There’s a story out of Almaty that stopped me. In 2016, a dog fell into a reservoir in Almaty and couldn't get out. The concrete walls were steep and the current was strong. A man tried to help the dog, but couldn't on his own.

And then something remarkable happened.

People noticed.

Not just one person. Many.

Strangers began to gather. They didn’t stand back. They didn’t assume someone else would handle it. They stepped forward.

Piece by piece, they figured it out. Reaching. Holding. Supporting one another so no one else would fall in.

And eventually… they pulled the dog to safety.

No applause. No cameras. Just a quiet, shared moment of doing the right thing.

The Installation was created by Yerbosyn Meldibekov, a prominent contemporary artist from Kazakhstan. His works are held in museum collections in Antwerp, Hong Kong, Singapore, and other cities.  They created this sculpture reflecting the efforts of these young men. It was revealed on March 18th. It was funded privately and approved by the city. It stands as a symbol of kindness, unity, and people coming together. This is the world I want to live in. It’s easy to feel like the world is, well, falling to the dark side. The common good doesn't seem to exist anymore.

But then something like this cuts through all of that.

Because in that moment, nothing else mattered. Not what they believed. Not what they had to do next.

Just this: A dog needed help. And people showed up.

There’s something about dogs that does this to us.

They soften us. They remind us to pay attention. They make us better without asking for anything in return.

And maybe that’s why moments like this feel so powerful.

Because they show us who we are when we’re at our best.

Not perfect. Not polished. Just… kind.

I think about this a lot.

How the smallest actions, the ones no one plans for, are often the ones that matter most.

A hand reaching out. A pause in someone’s day. A decision to step in instead of walking past. This rescue represents empathy compassion, teamwork. Many of the good things that have served humanity well.

“Petit à petit, l’oiseau fait son nid.”

Little by little, the bird builds its nest. Small acts. They add up.

They always do.

And maybe that’s the takeaway.

The reminder that kindness is still here. Everywhere. Waiting for someone to choose it.

Love in every bite.
